Israeli Soldier Investigated for Vandalizing Christ Statue in Lebanon
A soldier’s act of vandalism has intensified concerns over rising hostility toward Christians in the region.
DEBL, LEBANON — The Israeli military has launched an investigation after a soldier was photographed vandalizing a statue of the crucified Christ in the southern Lebanese village of Debl, an incident that has drawn condemnation from both political leaders and Christian communities.
The image, which circulated widely online, shows the soldier striking the head of the statue with a sledgehammer. Israeli authorities confirmed the photo’s authenticity and said the statue had been damaged, though the exact timing of the act remains unclear. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the behavior, expressing regret and promising disciplinary action, while the military called the conduct inconsistent with its values.
Local officials and Christian leaders voiced outrage, with Debl’s mayor calling for broader accountability amid reports of property destruction. The incident comes amid documented increases in harassment and violence against Christians in the region, raising concerns about religious tolerance and escalating tensions.
