Abp. Elpidophoros Marks Anniversary of Cyprus Invasion
The hierarch renewed his call for justice, peace, and the reunification of Cyprus on the invasion’s 52nd anniversary.
NEW YORK — Abp. Elpidophoros of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America has issued a statement marking the 52nd anniversary of Turkey’s 1974 invasion of Cyprus, reaffirming support for the island’s reunification and calling for a just and lasting peace.
"On this solemn anniversary, we remember the illegal invasion and occupation of Cyprus by Türkiye that took place fifty-two years ago," His Eminence stated. "Peace and justice for Cyprus remain unfulfilled, and we affirm our unwavering solidarity with Cyprus and its people. We continue to pray and work for a just, peaceful, and lasting settlement that will reunify the island."
The annual commemoration serves as an occasion for Orthodox faithful and the wider Greek community to remember the events of 1974 while renewing calls for reconciliation and a peaceful future.
