Bp. Gerasim Named Locum Tenens of the Diocese of the South
Bp. Gerasim has been appointed to guide the OCA's Diocese of the South through its transition to new episcopal leadership.
DALLAS, TX — The Orthodox Church in America (OCA) has entered a new period of leadership in the Diocese of the South following the retirement of Abp. Alexander and the appointment of a temporary diocesan administrator.
In a letter dated July 23, Metr. Tikhon announced that the Holy Synod, meeting in special session, declared the See of Dallas and the South vacant after Abp. Alexander concluded his ministry at the close of the Diocesan Assembly. In response, the primate appointed Bp. Gerasim of Fort Worth to serve as locum tenens, entrusting him with overseeing the diocese until a new ruling bishop is elected and installed.
The appointment took effect immediately. Metr. Tikhon instructed every parish and mission in the Diocese of the South to commemorate Bp. Gerasim as locum tenens during all divine services in keeping with the liturgical practice of the OCA. He also expressed appreciation for Bp. Gerasim's willingness to assume the role during the transition.
Looking ahead, Metr. Tikhon encouraged the clergy and faithful to support the interim leadership with their cooperation and prayers. He voiced confidence that the diocese would experience an orderly and peaceful transition while preparations are made for the election and installation of its next diocesan bishop, and he thanked the faithful for their continued service to the Church.
