Monk Arrested After Alleged Attack at Cyprus Monastery
A 51-year-old monk was ordered held for six days after allegedly injuring two people with a sharp object at a monastery in Cyprus.
PAPHOS, CYPRUS — A 51-year-old monk has been arrested after allegedly attacking two people with a sharp object during a confrontation at the Monastery of Agios Neophytos in Tala, Cyprus.
The incident reportedly began when members of an ecclesiastical committee arrived at the monastery to inform the monk that he was required to surrender his cell and leave the premises. According to reports, the monk reacted violently when the committee attempted to enforce the decision, attacking a 53-year-old technician who was accompanying the group.
The technician was allegedly struck in the neck and hand and was taken to Paphos General Hospital, where he received stitches before being admitted for further treatment. A 27-year-old monk reportedly attempted to intervene and disarm the attacker but suffered an injury to his hand. He received first aid at the hospital and was later discharged.
Police officers from the Paphos Criminal Investigation Department arrested the suspect shortly afterward. He is being investigated on charges including attempted murder, causing grievous bodily harm, assault, carrying a knife, and the illegal possession and transportation of an offensive weapon.
A Paphos court subsequently ordered that the suspect remain in custody for six days while police continue investigating the incident.
Previously, the UOJ reported that Athens police arrested a Metropolitan on suspicion of indecency.
