OCA Fall Clergy Synaxis Focuses on Retirement

SPRINGFIELD, VA — More than 70 clergy of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) participated online in the Office of Pastoral Life’s Fall 2026 Synaxis on September 15, with the quarterly gathering focusing on clergy retirement.

The Synaxis provides OCA clergy with opportunities for prayer, reflection, shared learning, and mutual encouragement. The September gathering centered on the practical and spiritual considerations involved in transitioning from active parish ministry to retirement.

The keynote address was delivered by Archpriest Thomas Moore, pastor emeritus of Holy Apostles Orthodox Church in Columbia, South Carolina. Fr. Thomas served the parish for many years before retiring in 2022.

Ordained to the priesthood in 1997, Fr. Thomas has devoted his ministry to pastoral care, counseling, and community service. He holds degrees in psychology and family counseling, as well as a Master of Divinity from St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary.

Following the keynote, clergy participated in breakout sessions examining financial, physical, emotional, and relational preparation for retirement. The discussions also addressed preparing clergy families and parish communities for the transition.

The Office of Pastoral Life conducts the Synaxis quarterly as part of its broader ministry to support OCA clergy and their families. Other programs include peer-learning groups, financial health initiatives, pastoral retreats, and ministry for clergy wives.
