Orthodox Mission Reaches Milestone in Northern Madagascar

DIEGO SUAREZ, MADAGASCAR — The Orthodox Church marked a milestone in northern Madagascar this week with the first Holy Baptisms celebrated in the city of Diego Suarez, an event diocesan leaders described as the beginning of a new chapter for missionary outreach in the region.

The baptisms were celebrated at the Church of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel under the Diocese of Mahajanga and Northern Madagascar of the Patriarchate of Alexandria. Following the services, Bp. Nifon of Northern Madagascar hosted a traditional meal for the newly baptized faithful and those who attended, giving thanks for the growth of the local Orthodox community.

The celebrations come as the diocese continues to expand its missionary presence in Diego Suarez. A new church complex is currently under construction to accommodate the area's growing pastoral and educational needs, while a permanent priest has recently been assigned to the Church of the Holy Apostles. The appointment ensures regular celebration of the Divine Liturgy and the Holy Mysteries, as well as ongoing pastoral care for the faithful.

Diocesan leaders view Diego Suarez as central to the future of Orthodoxy in northern Madagascar. Alongside the diocesan center in Mahajanga, the city is expected to become a major hub for missionary activity as the Patriarchate of Alexandria continues its efforts to establish and strengthen Orthodox communities throughout the region.
