Orthodox Prison Ministry Certificate Program Sets Nov. 1 Application Deadline
OCPM’s prison ministry certificate combines Orthodox theological training with firsthand experience serving incarcerated people.
SOUTH CANAAN, PA — Orthodox Christian Prison Ministry (OCPM) is accepting applications through Nov. 1 for its Certificate Program in Prison Ministry, a training program designed for Orthodox clergy and lay volunteers interested in serving people in correctional facilities.
The program, offered in partnership with St. Tikhon’s Orthodox Theological Seminary, combines online instruction with an intensive summer residency. The 2027 spring semester begins with a virtual orientation on Jan. 12, followed by four online lessons covering religion in the prison environment, pastoral care, the effects of incarceration on families and parishes, and other aspects of ministry. Classes are conducted through Zoom and include discussions, readings, and writing assignments.
The week-long residency, scheduled for June 5–12, will take place at St. Tikhon’s Seminary and include daily visits to SCI Waymart, a Pennsylvania state prison located near the seminary. Students will shadow experienced prison ministers, participate in Bible studies, and learn about the “ministry of presence,” while also taking part in lectures on addiction, burnout prevention, parish-based prison ministry, and mental health in corrections. Prison clearance and a background check are required.
Tuition is $2,800, with an additional $1,000 residency fee covering housing and meals, while financial aid may be available.
