Sacred Music Institute Draws Hundreds to Antiochian Village

LIGONIER, PA — Hundreds of clergy, musicians, adults, and teenagers gathered at the Antiochian Village Conference and Retreat Center July 8-12 for the 41st Annual Sacred Music Institute, continuing a decades-long tradition of liturgical music education and fellowship in the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America.

The institute offered instruction for participants of every experience level, including Byzantine chant in both traditional neumatic notation and Western staff notation, Western music theory, choral conducting, and repertoire from leading Orthodox composers. Those lessons culminated in the liturgical services, where attendees united as a single choir and kliros, combining the Archdiocese’s diverse musical traditions in worship.

A highlight of this year's program was the Youth Music Ministry, which celebrated its 15th year. The initiative welcomed 35 teenagers who participated in intensive musical training while strengthening their commitment to church life. Organizers noted that many former participants have gone on to become chanters, choir directors, seminarians, and instructors at the institute itself, with informal late-night hymn singing in the chapel reflecting the group's enthusiasm and dedication.

The Department of Sacred Music said the institute remains its flagship educational program and has inspired numerous additional initiatives, including the Antiochian Orthodox Ecclesiastical Online Music School, whose fall semester begins in September. The department also announced that the Winter Sacred Music Institute will be held Feb. 4-7, 2027, in Modesto, California, followed by the 42nd Annual Sacred Music Institute at Antiochian Village on July 7-11, 2027.
