Serbian Diocese to Host Second Iconography Camp at Shadeland

SHADELAND, PA — The Eastern American Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church will host its second Iconography Camp from October 23–25, 2026, at St. Sava Camp at the Monastery Estate of the Most Holy Mother of God in Shadeland, Pennsylvania. Held with the blessing of His Grace Bp. Irinej of Washington-New York and Eastern America, the weekend will bring together iconographers and students of iconography for prayer, instruction, and sacred artistic work.

The inaugural camp, held at Shadeland in October 2025, brought together iconographers and students from across the United States for theological reflection, artistic training, prayer, and fellowship. The gathering was directed by Presbyter George Popovich of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, a theologian and master iconographer with more than 30 years of experience, who also serves as director of the Iconography Camp.

A central emphasis of the inaugural camp was understanding the icon as “Theology in Color,” with participants combining theological study and practical instruction in sacred art. The week included daily theological lectures, hands-on work, common meals, and prayer, culminating in the celebration of the Divine Liturgy. The 2025 participants also undertook a major fresco project at the Shadeland Monastery Church, connecting Serbian Orthodox heritage with the continuing life of the Church in America.

The 2026 camp is being presented as an opportunity for participants to “Pray, Learn, Paint” and to take part in the living tradition of Orthodox iconography. The Diocese has previously expressed a vision of developing an ongoing Iconography and Theology Center at Shadeland Monastery Estate, with the aim of forming future generations of iconographers who can serve the Church through sacred art marked by both beauty and theological depth.

The Second Iconography Camp is intended for both established iconographers and students seeking to deepen their knowledge and practice.
