St. Tikhon’s seminarian Andrew Benton was commissioned as a U.S. Navy officer as he prepares for future service as a military chaplain.

SOUTH CANAAN, PA — The St. Tikhon’s Seminary community gathered on September 29 to celebrate the commissioning of second-year seminarian Andrew Benton as a U.S. Navy officer in the Chaplain Candidate Program.

Abp. Michael, Rector of St. Tikhon’s Seminary, joined seminarians, faculty, staff, and community members for the ceremony. Rev. Dr. Demetrios Harper, Professor of Dogmatic Theology at St. Tikhon’s and a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Chaplain Corps, administered Benton’s oath of office.

Benton previously served for 10 years as a U.S. Marine Corps officer, attaining the rank of major. As he continues his theological formation at St. Tikhon’s, he will also prepare for service as a Navy chaplain through internships at military installations, Officer Development School, and the first phase of Naval Chaplain School.

Following the commissioning, the seminary community marked the occasion with cake, which Benton cut using the ceremonial sword he carried during his Marine Corps service. The seminary noted that chaplains serve as noncombatants, making the ceremony the last occasion on which Benton will carry the sword in a military context.

Benton’s commissioning marks another step toward his anticipated ministry among members of the U.S. military. The St. Tikhon’s community offered congratulations and prayers for him as he continues his formation and prepares to serve those serving in the armed forces.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Metr. Saba led the annual retreat for Antiochian seminarians.
