State-of-the-Art Hospital Opens in Republic of Srpska Under Patronage of St. Stephen the Protomartyr
Modern medical complex inaugurated on January 5, 2026, as part of Republic of Srpska Day celebrations, with officials citing major improvements in regional health care.
TREBINJE — A new hospital, “Saint Archdeacon Stephen” was ceremonially opened in Trebinje on January 5, 2026, as part of events marking the Day of the Republic of Srpska. Officials described the facility as a state-of-the-art health complex that will significantly enhance medical care for Trebinje and the wider region.
As reported by UOJ-Serbia with reference to Politika, Assistant Director for Non-Medical Affairs Predrag Vreća said hospital staff are proud to provide citizens with a modern facility equipped with advanced medical technology. “There are many new developments, made possible with the strong support of the Government of the Republic of Srpska, President Milorad Dodik, the relevant ministry, and the city,” Vreća stated, adding that the new center will raise treatment standards.
Vreća emphasized that the hospital will enable the introduction of procedures and diagnostic methods previously unavailable in this part of the Republic of Srpska. He also pointed to the contribution of Academician Predrag Peško, who will play a key role in ensuring safe and effective care. According to Vreća, the hospital will offer cardiology services and an angiography suite, reducing the need for patients to travel to Banja Luka or Belgrade. Expanded radiology, laboratory, and emergency services are also planned, with the emergency unit designed as a “clinic within a clinic.”
Trebinje Mayor Mirko Ćurić described the opening as a historic day for the city, noting that the project is the result of years of joint work by institutions of the Republic of Srpska and the local community. He said the hospital’s significance extends beyond the city, benefiting residents throughout the region.
The project was supported by the Government of the Republic of Srpska and the City of Trebinje, with backing from the President of the Republic of Srpska, as well as both the former and current prime ministers. Contributions by the Minister of Health and his team, along with Academician Peško, were also highlighted.
Vreća said staff training and efforts to resolve administrative challenges are ongoing, with full relocation from the old hospital expected by the end of February. He added that external collaborators will be engaged to further improve the quality of care.
The ceremonial opening was attended by numerous delegations from the Republic of Srpska and Serbia and, according to RTRS, underscored the importance of unity and long-term investment in projects of broad public interest.
Previously, UOJ reported that a parish in Georgia (United States) had celebrated its patronal feast of St. Stephen.
