Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew Named Honorary Professor in Zakynthos

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew was honored by the Ionian University and engaged with both local leaders and international Orthodox delegations during his visit to Zakynthos.

ZAKYNTHOS, GREECE — From February 28 to March 2, 2026, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew was named Honorary Professor of Ionian University and High Patron of Zakynthian Letters and the Environment during a series of high-profile meetings on the island.

The Patriarch received delegations from the local Church, the university, and government authorities, including Metr. Dionysios of Zakynthos, Archimandrite Seraphim Konidis, Mayor Georgios Stasinopoulos, and university officials. In a formal announcement, the University Senate conferred the honorary professorship on Patr. Bartholomew in recognition of his lifelong dedication to ecological awareness and environmental stewardship.

During his visit, the Patriarch also met with Metr. Nathanael of Chicago, Cardinal Blase Joseph Cupich of Chicago, and Bp. Sabbas of Donetsk and Slavyansk of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, who brought a large group of Ukrainian pilgrims. These encounters highlighted the Patriarch’s continued engagement with both local and international Orthodox communities.

Previously, the UOJ reported that the Ecumenical Patriarch met with Abp. John of Albania on his Austrian trip.
