Monk Killed in Tragic Mt. Athos Road Accident
A monk was killed in a Mt. Athos road accident near Karyes during the Easter season.
MT. ATHOS — A monk was killed in a fatal road accident in the Karyes area of Mt. Athos, bringing deep sorrow to the Athonite monastic community and pilgrims visiting during the Easter season. The accident occurred when a utility vehicle driven by the monk overturned on a mountainous road above Karyes.
According to Ekklisia Online, the monk may have suffered a heart attack before losing control of the vehicle. A second passenger in the vehicle was also injured in the crash. Emergency responders transported the injured individual to the General Hospital of Polygyros for medical treatment.
Local authorities, in cooperation with the administration of Mt. Athos, have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The tragedy occurred shortly after the litany of the revered icon of the Virgin Mary, Axion Esti, which had been held in Karyes with particular reverence during the Easter period.
The monk who died was a member of the Vogoroditsa Skete and was widely loved, with news of his passing bringing deep grief to the monastic brotherhood.
