Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol of the Cypriot Orthodox Church said that the future head of the Church of Cyprus must comply with the decisions of the Synod to commemorate Dumenko, alphanews.live reports.

Metropolitan Athanasios was asked to comment on the words of Metropolitan Isaiah of Tamassos, who said that the decision of the Phanar to recognize the OCU is not subject to revision. “If you are elected, what will you do?” the journalist asked Met. Athanasios.

“The bishop is obliged to abide by the decisions of the Holy Synod, regardless of what he personally believes. Therefore, no matter who is elected as archbishop, he will respect the decisions of the Synod. This is how it should be, and this is right,” Metropolitan Athanasios replied.

However, the presenter was not satisfied with the answer and inquired about the personal opinion of Metropolitan Athanasios on the issue of Ukrainian autocephaly.

“At the moment and under the current circumstances, I consider this a very sensitive issue. We must have peace and tranquility. Let the whole situation in Ukraine first become clear, and then we will deal with the ecclesiastical issue,” the Metropolitan replied.

According to him, “at the moment, people are suffering in Ukraine, the war is raging there,” and “now the timing is bad for ecclesiological issues.”

Earlier, the UOJ wrote that, according to Metropolitan Isaiah of Tamassos, there can be no return of the decisions of the Phanar on the OCU.
