SVS Press Releases New Volume by St. Maximus the Confessor
The publisher's new St. Maximus volume explores the theological foundations of Orthodox Christology and the defense of Chalcedon.
YONKERS, NY — St. Vladimir’s Seminary Press has announced the release of "Christological Letters: St. Maximus the Confessor," a new volume featuring eight important letters by St. Maximus the Confessor on the doctrine of Christ’s two natures.
The collection includes Letters 12–19, written before St. Maximus’ decisive role in the struggle against Monothelitism. According to the publisher, the texts respond largely to the Christology of Severus of Antioch while presenting a defense of the Chalcedonian doctrine rooted in the patristic and conciliar tradition of the Church.
The volume includes a new English translation alongside the original Greek text on facing pages, making it suitable for both academic study and theological reflection. SVS Press noted that the letters also provide important context for St. Maximus’ later teaching on the two wills and two operations of Christ, themes that became central to later Orthodox Christological debates and councils.
