On November 23, 2023, Patriarch Bartholomew stated that the path to the unity of all Christians is irreversible, according to orthodoxianewsagency.gr.

During the awarding of the honorary degree in theology at the Pontifical University of Naples, Patriarch Bartholomew told Catholics about the initiatives of the Ecumenical Patriarchate "for a new rapprochement of Christians from the East and the West in the 20th century."

Mentioning the role of his predecessors – the ecumenists Patriarchs Meletius and Athenagoras as the main initiators of the emergence of the World Council of Churches, as well as the mutual lifting of anathemas between the Ecumenical Patriarchate and Catholics, the head of the Phanar stated that all these steps testify to the "irreversible path to the unity of all Christian churches."

Earlier, the UOJ reported that the head of the Phanar prayed together with the Catholic Bishop of Naples.
