The NSDC perceives the strong reaction of Donald Trump's electorate to any persecution of Christianity as a threat to the smooth adoption of the law banning the UOC. Therefore, Andriy Kovalenko, the head of the NSDC's Disinformation Counteraction Center, decided to declare that it is Russians who are spreading narratives about persecutions of the UOC.

"Since the MAGA electorate of Donald Trump strongly reacts to any persecution of Christianity, Russians are actively promoting narratives about the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate, alleging that persecutions of Christianity are taking place there," Kovalenko said at a press conference on April 19, 2024.

He also mentioned that "it is the Russian army that is destroying churches, including those of the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate, and killing priests of the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate."

Despite the fact that clergy and believers of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church suffer from this, which the authorities are trying to ban legislatively, according to him, the church issue is an external information threat.

"Our task here is to actively promote narratives that this threat is not only internal to Ukraine but also external. And this is not only an American track, but there is also Europe. This is a very important church history, often not public, but it is dealt with by our special services, monitoring all these threats," he added, without specifying what threats believers of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church pose to America and Europe.

As the UOJ reported, the National Security and Defense Council is preparing the ground for passing the law to ban the UOC.

The UOJ also wrote that U.S. Republicans had linked assistance to Ukraine with non-interference in the affairs of the Church. Earlier, R. Amsterdam revealed that the Ukrainian authorities allocated $3.5 million to US lobbyists to destroy the UOC.
