Ancient Intercession Church catches fire in Kyiv Podil

On May 25th, in the evening, the Holy Protection Church on Podil, a monument of the 18th century architecture in Kyiv, caught fire. As local Telegram channels report, the column of flames and smoke reached five meters.

Firefighting crews arrived at the scene, attempting to promptly extinguish the flames and save the ancient temple. The State Emergency Service reported that household waste caught fire on the church grounds.

"On May 25th at 20:53, a report of a fire on Pokrovska Street was received by the rescue service. Household waste caught fire on the church grounds. The fire covering an area of 20 square meters was extinguished by 21:27," the department reported.

There were no casualties or injuries. Law enforcement agencies are determining the cause of the fire.

The Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos Church is an operating stone church in Kyiv on Podil, which is an architectural monument of the 18th century. Since 2018, it has belonged to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU).

As reported by the UOJ, OCU cleric Yaroslav Yasenets commented on the demolition of the Tithe Monastery and explained why destroying churches and rejoicing at this is unacceptable.
