On May 30, 2024, a court session was held at the Kyiv Court of Appeals regarding the change in preventive measures for UOC priest Serhiy Chertylin, who has been in pre-trial detention for several months despite his poor health. According to the Save_Lavra Telegram channel, the next hearing will take place on July 22.
"The defense requested to postpone the hearing for two weeks to obtain additional medical records from the doctors currently treating the suspect. However, the judges said, 'We are going on vacation, you need to understand our workload,'" the report said.
It was noted that Father Serhiy is seriously ill and has not yet been granted permission for surgery.
During the hearing, the clergyman requested the recusal of the panel of judges handling his case, but this request was denied.
Military personnel came to support the UOC priest. Junior Sergeant of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and combat medic Lariya Zburliuk said she understands how dangerous it is for him to be in detention given his condition.
"This is an injustice, and we must fight against it," she said.
As the UOJ previously reported, the lawyers of Father Serhiy Chertylin are filing a complaint regarding pressure on the judge.
