On October 28, 2024, the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Sviatoslav Shevchuk, met with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace, the UGCC press service reports. The meeting lasted over 45 minutes, focusing on support for Ukraine.

Shevchuk expressed deep gratitude to France for its assistance to Ukraine amid the war, stating, “Ukraine is wounded but unbroken. On behalf of the Ukrainian people, I want to thank you for your consistent and tangible support since the start of the full-scale invasion. You were the first to support our President’s peace formula. We saw how you did everything possible to prevent this terrible war,” he said.

President Macron assured Shevchuk of continued full support for Ukraine. The conversation also covered France's active role in the rehabilitation of Ukrainian children who had been abducted by Russia and subsequently returned to Ukraine. With French support, two rehabilitation centers will be established in Ukraine for these children.

They also discussed Cardinal Zuppi’s mission and the challenges related to the process of returning children.

As previously reported by the UOJ, Patriarch Bartholomew praised the UGCC for standing “with its people”.
