Member of Parliament Volodymyr Viatrovych addressed Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko with a letter signed by 25 MPs from various factions, urging the return of the historical name, Hetman Ivan Mazepa Street, to Lavrska Street in Kyiv's Pechersk district, where the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is located. Viatrovych announced this on his Facebook page.
“The disgraceful decision by the Kyiv City Council in 2010, made at the demand of [Patriarch] Gundiayev and Yanukovych, to rename most of Mazepa Street to Lavrska, is still in effect, even though Yanukovych has long fled, Gundiayev is under sanctions, and the Russian Orthodox Church is banned by law. It's time to finally fix this,” the MP noted.
He stated that appeals to rename the street have already been made to the Kyiv City Council. According to Viatrovych, a relevant petition has gathered the required number of signatures.
“It is time to finally act. We urge the Kyiv Mayor and the City Council to immediately undertake all necessary procedures to restore historical justice,” Viatrovych emphasized.
As previously reported by the UOJ, Metropolitan Clement spoke about the anathema of Mazepa.
