Living Water in the Desert: 182 Baptized in Kenya’s Turkana Region
Turkana, Kenya—The Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC) recently celebrated the mass baptism of 182 catechumens in the remote village of Chok Chok. This sacred event is part of a larger movement, with more than 700 people baptized in Turkana over the past year through an OCMC grant aimed at planting Orthodoxy in one of Africa’s most desolate corners.
Held amid extreme drought, the baptisms serve as a profound witness to Christ’s Great Commission: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:19-20). The scene—dozens immersed in the name of the Holy Trinity—testifies to spiritual life flourishing even in barren soil.
Looking ahead, the Diocese of Eldoret and Northern Kenya will continue its evangelization efforts into a second year, with OCMC’s support. The mission not only nurtures the faith but also advocates for clean water access—ensuring these vibrant new communities can grow in both spirit and sustainability.
