Holy Cross Dean Co-Leads Patristic Study Bible Project for Oxford University Press

BROOKLINE, MA — Fr. Eugen J. Pentiuc, Holy Cross Dean and Archbishop Demetrios Distinguished Professor of Biblical Studies and Christian Origins, has been appointed Co-Editor-in-Chief of The Ancient Christian Study Bible (ACSB), a landmark new study Bible commissioned by Oxford University Press in summer 2024. The ACSB will become the fourth major study Bible in OUP’s lineup, joining The New Oxford Annotated Bible, The Catholic Study Bible, and The Jewish Study Bible.

Developed with an ecumenical and scholarly scope, the ACSB will offer a new English translation based on the Greek Septuagint (Vaticanus Codex) and the New Testament Patriarchal Text (1904), accompanied by extensive patristic commentary from the first millennium of Christian thought. More than 50 international scholars are contributing, with synthetic patristic notes comprising 80% of the commentary, complemented by textual and exegetical insights.

“This new Ancient Christian Study Bible will capture the insights of the modern academy and the wisdom of the ancient Church to lead readers deeper into the meaning of Scripture and contemplation of God’s Word, Jesus Christ,” said HCHC President Dr. Demetrios Katos. “It is the brainchild of the Dean of our Theological School, Fr. Pentiuc, and there is nothing more gratifying than knowing one of our own conceived this project and will lead it to completion.”

Currently in its second phase of translating from Greek to English and writing the annotations, the ACSB’s final volume will be designed for use by Orthodox clergy, students, scholars, and all readers seeking a deeper connection to the scriptural traditions of the early Church. It is important to note that Fr. Pentiuc was also a General Editor for the Orthodox Study Bible.
