BROOKLINE, MA — Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology has recently announced the appointment of Rev. Dr. Demetrios Bathrellos as tenure-track Associate Professor of Theology. Fr. Bathrellos, a distinguished Orthodox theologian with a global academic background, will join the faculty in mid-August and will teach courses in Dogmatics and Patristics.

A native of Athens, Greece, Fr. Bathrellos holds degrees in classical philology and theology from the University of Athens and earned his PhD in systematic theology at King’s College London under the supervision of Professors Colin E. Gunton and Metropolitan John (Zizioulas), with examination by Metropolitan Kallistos Ware and Fr. Andrew Louth.

His pastoral service includes parishes in London and Athens, while his academic career has taken him to institutions including Emory University, the Institute for Orthodox Christian Studies (Cambridge), and St Andrew’s Theological College (Sydney). A prolific author, he is best known for his monograph "Person, Nature, and Will in the Christology of St Maximus the Confessor" (Oxford University Press, 2004), and is completing a new work on the sinlessness of Christ.

Fr. Bathrellos also serves on several theological boards and committees, including IOTA, the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, and international ecumenical dialogues, representing the Church of Greece in the Lutheran-Orthodox Dialogue.

“We are happy to welcome Fr. Demetrios as an esteemed member of our faculty,” said Holy Cross Dean Fr. Eugen J. Pentiuc. "I am convinced that Fr. Bathrellos' international reputation as scholar and academic will contribute to the high standards that Holy Cross upholds as a premier Greek Orthodox School of Theology nationally and internationally."

Previously, UOJ reported that the Holy Cross Diaconate Program's summer session saw record participation.
