Mount Athos Hit With 4.0 Earthquake

KARYES — An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 on the Richter scale struck Mount Athos shortly before 11:30 PM on Tuesday, August 13, 2025.

According to the revised solution from the Geodynamic Institute, the epicenter of the earthquake is estimated to be 10 kilometers west-northwest of Karyes.

The focal depth of the earthquake is estimated at 13.1 kilometers.

There has been an unusual amount of seismic activity effecting Mount Athos recently.

As the UOJ previously reported, Professor Efthymios Lekkas, president of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization, says that this “strange phenomenon” has been going on for over a year now.

The monks have been warned that several more earthquakes will probably strike the Holy Mountain in the months to come.
