Renowned Theologian Prof. Chrysostomos Stamoulis Reposes at 61

THESSALONIKI — The academic and ecclesiastical community is mourning the sudden death of Professor Chrysostomos Stamoulis, a leading Orthodox theologian and cultural figure, who reposed at the age of 61. Stamoulis served as Professor of Dogmatic and Symbolic Theology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where he also held positions as Dean of the Faculty of Theology and Chair of the Department of Theology.

An Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Stamoulis studied in Thessaloniki, Belgrade, and Durham, and taught widely in Europe, the United States, and the Middle East. His prolific scholarship included several published works on Orthodox dogmatics, fundamentalism, and aesthetics. He also directed the International Observatory on Religious Fundamentalism of the Metropolis of Alexandroupolis.

Beyond academia, Stamoulis was active in the arts as a composer and conductor, founding the renowned “Voices” Choir of St. Barbara’s Church in Thessaloniki. In a 2023 interview, he envisioned theology as a discipline fostering diversity and resisting fanaticism.

The funeral will be held Thursday, August 21, at 12 p.m. at the Cathedral of Hagia Sophia in Thessaloniki, followed by burial at the “Anastaseos tou Kyriou” Cemetery in Thermi. His family has requested that, in lieu of wreaths, donations be made to organizations and institutions in his memory.
