Verkhovna Rada Debates Whether There Are Enough Votes to Repeal Law Banning the UOC

KYIV — Member of Parliament from the “Holos” party, Yulia Sirko (also known as Yulia Klymenko), raised the issue of the possible repeal of Law 3894 banning the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) in the context of potential peace negotiations.

“The law has been adopted, and changing it requires votes in parliament. I doubt they will be found,” stated the MP, who one year ago was among the initiators of the law’s adoption.

According to Sirko, the issue of religious organizations is regularly raised in discussions about conditions for ending the war. However, she insisted that changes in religious legislation are supposedly unacceptable to Ukrainian society.

“Just like with territorial concessions, which would require amendments to the Constitution. These are simply utopian ‘wish lists.’ The issues of the Russian language and the Church are unacceptable for Ukrainian society, and this could realistically lead to a revolution,” Sirko declared.

She further noted that while the authorities may informally promise anything, the situation would change once a different government comes to power. “If we want peace, we need to look for options, but completely surrendering our position is unacceptable,” the MP emphasized.
