Met. Nicholas Leads 75th Anniversary Celebration of St. Sergius Cathedral in Cleveland

CLEVELAND — The Russian Orthodox Church Abroad's (ROCOR) Diocese of Chicago and Mid-America joyfully welcomed His Eminence Met. Nicholas of Eastern America and New York, First Hierarch of ROCOR, for the 75th anniversary celebration of St. Sergius of Radonezh Cathedral on Oct. 25–26.

According to a release from the diocese, Met. Nicholas arrived on Saturday, leading a panikhida for the departed founders and clergy of the parish, followed by the festive vigil in the beautifully adorned cathedral, where the choir, directed by Natalia Marzev, offered hymns of praise.

On Sunday morning, His Eminence was greeted by the ringing of bells and clergy led by Archpriest Ilya Marzev, cathedral rector. Concelebrating with nine priests and three deacons, Met. Nicholas presided at the Divine Liturgy, during which many of the faithful received Holy Communion. A cross procession followed under clear autumn skies.

At the conclusion of the service, a Synodal Decree signed by all members of the ROCOR Synod of Bishops was read in honor of the parish’s anniversary. Archpriest Peter Selenoi received the Kursk Icon Medal (Second Class) for 50 years of priestly service, while the cathedral parish was presented with a hand-painted icon of the Royal Romanov Martyrs. Archpriest Ilya Marzev was also awarded the ROCOR Centenary Jeweled Cross.

Celebrations continued at St. Sava Serbian Cathedral Hall, where parish children and the choir performed, and longtime members shared memories of the cathedral’s rich history. Archpriest Gregory Joyce, diocesan secretary, conveyed congratulations from Abp. Gabriel, Locum Tenens of the Diocese.

The day closed in gratitude and joy as the faithful gave thanks for 75 years of steadfast witness and spiritual life at St. Sergius Cathedral.
