CARDIFF — A parish of the Russian Church Abroad (ROCOR) has launched a fundraiser toward the purchase of its own church in Wales. Services are currently being held in an evangelical church in Cardiff.

"Many may ask why someone far from South Wales should invest in a church here, but this is not simply about bricks and mortar - this is about a rediscovery of the ancient ways of Faith in a land blessed by our ancient saints: a land of sacred poetry and prayer," the GoFundMe page for the fundraiser states.

The Parish of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in Cardiff is a multi-national and multi-generational community that is raising £200,000 ($262,660) to secure a permanent church. Wales is an ancient Christian nation, the fundraiser states, with faith once shaping every town and village. Potential contributors are being invited to renew the light of Orthodoxy there.

"This is an opportunity to stand with us at the foundation of an enduring legacy: a parish-center where people of every background can find Christ; a home of prayer and worship; a place of living witness to the beauty of our ancient Orthodox Faith in a nation that has waited centuries for its return," the GoFundMe page says.

At the time of publishing, £6,121 has been raised. "May God bless you, and all who have supported our appeal!" said Hieromonk Mark Underwood, rector of the parish.

Previously, UOJ reported that a GoFundMe has been launched to support an Orthodox priest in a remote Alaskan village who lost everything during the floods that recently hit the western parts of the state.
