LUSAKA, ZAMBIA — Metr. John of Zambia and Mozambique has issued an urgent appeal for international humanitarian assistance following devastating floods and extreme weather that have struck Mozambique in recent weeks. In a public statement, the hierarch warned that repeated flooding and tropical cyclones have severely affected southern and central regions, including Maputo, Gaza, Inhambane, Sofala, and Manica.
Metr. John described the situation as a rapidly escalating humanitarian crisis, citing widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure and significant loss of life. He said current estimates indicate that more than two million people could be affected by the end of the rainy season in April 2026.
The Metropolitan called for immediate aid, highlighting shortages of shelter, food, clean water, clothing, and medical supplies, with particular concern for women, children, and the injured. He noted that the Holy Metropolis, working with the Hellenic Red Cross and local partners, is already preparing shipments of relief supplies to Mozambique.
Previously, the UOJ reported on the beheading of 30 Christians by Islamic militants in Mozambique.
