St. Sophia Church Opens Doors for Live Byzantine Icon Installation

SAN ANTONIO, TX — Visitors to St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church have the rare opportunity to observe the sacred craft of Byzantine iconography as new hand-painted icons are installed in preparation for the parish’s upcoming centennial celebration.

Beginning March 10 and continuing through March 28, master iconographers Panagiotis Christodoulou and Dimitris Christodoulou will work inside the church to install a series of newly created icons. The project forms part of the parish’s preparations for its Centennial Celebration, expected to take place in roughly two months.

Throughout the installation period, the church will welcome visitors who wish to witness the placement of traditional Orthodox icons within the sanctuary. The addition of these works represents a significant milestone for the historic parish, enhancing both the spiritual atmosphere and visual beauty of the church.

Guests will also be able to learn about Byzantine iconographic techniques and the deep theological symbolism that informs Orthodox sacred art. The iconographers are expected to explain the spiritual principles guiding the centuries-old tradition, which remains central to Orthodox worship and church architecture.
