KYIV — Metr. Arseniy, abbot of the Svyatogorsk Lavra, successfully underwent heart surgery on March 18, 2026, according to the monastery’s official Telegram channel. The operation took place in a Kyiv clinic on the feast day marking the uncovering of the relics of St. Luke of Crimea, adding spiritual significance to the procedure.

Following his release from pretrial detention on February 25, the hierarch completed medical examinations and preparations for the procedure. Doctors later stated that his extended detention had significantly worsened his condition due to coronary heart disease, potentially risking irreversible damage if left untreated. The surgery reportedly lasted several hours and concluded without complications.

During the operation, the Lavra’s monastic brethren and skete sisters held a prayer service, urging the faithful to pray for his recovery. Metr.  Arseniy is now expected to undergo a period of supervised rehabilitation as he regains his strength.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Metr. Arseniy’s custody was prolonged despite health warnings.
