Georgia Offers Free Transport for Patr. Ilia II’s Funeral

TBILISI, GEORGIA — Authorities have announced that public transportation will be free across the capital on March 21 and 22 to accommodate mourners attending the funeral of Patr. Ilia II. The decision, confirmed by the Government Administration, is part of nationwide efforts to facilitate public participation in honoring the late Patriarch.

In addition to municipal transit, special provisions have been made for those traveling from other regions. Free transportation to Tbilisi will be arranged, with additional buses deployed to handle increased demand. Georgian Railway will also offer complimentary service, including extra trains to ensure that all who wish to attend the funeral can do so.

Patr. Ilia II, who passed away on March 17 at the age of 93, led the Georgian Orthodox Church for decades and was widely revered. He will be laid to rest on March 22 at Sioni Cathedral, where thousands are expected to gather in mourning and prayer.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Georgia mourned Patr. Ilia II as his final letter urged forgiveness.
