NUUK, GREENLAND — Bp. Makarios Dragoi of the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Northern Europe arrived Monday for a weeklong pastoral and missionary visit, during which he has celebrated the Divine Liturgy and baptized local residents seeking to enter into communion with the Church.

In a message shared on the diocese’s Facebook page, the bishop described the mission as taking place under challenging and unusual conditions. Surrounded by vast icy landscapes, he emphasized the contrast between the harsh environment and the spiritual purpose of the visit.

“Amidst glaciers and vast expanses of snow and ice, we share the warmth and light of the Gospel of Christ the Savior,” Bp. Makarios said, expressing hope that hearts will be warmed by divine grace.

He also called on the faithful to pray for the success of the mission in the remote Arctic region, part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

Previously, the UOJ reported that an Alaskan missionary family wrapped up an Orthodox church project in the South Pacific.
