SKOPJE, NORTH MACEDONIA — The Holy Synod of Bishops of the Macedonian Orthodox Church–Ohrid Archbishopric has elected a new ruling hierarch for the Diocese of Australia and New Zealand, bringing to a close nearly three decades of administration by Metr. Petar of Prespa and Pelagonia.

During its March 19 session, the Synod accepted Metr. Petar’s request to be relieved of his administrative duties and proceeded to appoint His Grace Bp. Nikola (Trajkovski) of Velica as the new Metropolitan of Australia and New Zealand. His appointment took effect immediately following the decision.

Born in 1974 in Skopje, Metr. Nikola pursued studies in literature and Byzantine studies before entering monastic life in 1998. He later served as abbot of the Monastery of St. Nicholas in Mariovo, where he led restoration and spiritual renewal efforts, and was consecrated a bishop in 2024. The Synod concluded its announcement with prayers for the faithful during the Great Fast.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Abp. Makarios of Australia said miracles should not be the driving motive for faith.
