DNIPRO, UKRAINE — A historic building housing the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church’s cultural center “Lestvytsia” was destroyed in a Russian nighttime strike on April 16, 2026, according to local reports.
The attack struck the area around Shevchenko Street, sparking a large fire that engulfed the late-nineteenth-century structure. The building, an architectural landmark known as an income house, sustained catastrophic damage as flames spread rapidly, leaving it effectively destroyed.
The site had served as a hub for Orthodox cultural and educational activity. The “Lestvytsia” center maintained media initiatives promoting Orthodox values, along with a sizable religious library and a Sunday school for children. Reports indicated that no military facilities were located in the area at the time of the strike.
The destruction highlights ongoing risks to civilian and cultural sites amid continued hostilities, with religious and historical institutions increasingly affected.
Previously, the UOJ reported that Russian shelling severely damaged the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Kherson.
