KODIAK, AK — Orthodox Christians from throughout Alaska and other parts of the country are invited to gather in August for the 56th Annual St. Herman Pilgrimage in Kodiak, according to a newly released schedule from the Diocese of Sitka and Alaska. The three-day pilgrimage honoring St. Herman of Alaska will take place Aug. 7–9 and include services, fellowship, and a pilgrimage to Spruce Island.

Events will open Friday evening at Holy Resurrection Cathedral with an Akathist service dedicated to St. Herman. Organizers said pilgrims will also receive information regarding transportation arrangements for the trip to Spruce Island, where Saturday’s outdoor pilgrimage activities are planned.

If weather conditions permit, participants will travel to the island Saturday for a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at Saints Sergius and Herman of Valaam Chapel, followed by a picnic gathering on the beach. After returning to Kodiak, pilgrims will attend an All-Night Vigil that evening. The weekend will conclude Sunday morning with Hierarchical Divine Liturgy and a banquet at the Afognak Center. Organizers advised pilgrims to prepare for wet and unpredictable coastal conditions. Attendees are encouraged to bring waterproof boots, rain gear, and warm clothing.

The annual pilgrimage has continued for more than five decades and remains one of Alaska’s best-known Orthodox gatherings, commemorating the monk whose missionary witness helped establish Orthodox Christianity among Alaska Native communities. The diocese also highlighted St. Herman’s famous words: “From this day, from this hour, from this minute, we shall strive above all else to love God and to do His Holy Will!”

While there is no cost for attending the pilgrimage or banquet, donations to support the event can be made here. Any questions should be directed to the Communications Secretary at commsecretary@odosa.org.

Previously, the UOJ reported that 200 youth attended the 46th annual St. Herman Conference in Albany.
