ENGLEWOOD, NJ — A newly released Orthodox Christian book examining marriage, identity, and modern cultural trends is now being made available to English-speaking readers. Titled "The Mystery of Marriage Amid Deconstruction," the work addresses contemporary debates surrounding love, gender, family, and personhood from an Orthodox theological perspective.
Written by Bassam A. Nassif, the volume explores how secularism, moral relativism, and shifting cultural attitudes have influenced society’s understanding of marriage and human identity. The book contrasts those developments with the Orthodox Christian understanding of marriage as a sacred mystery centered on communion, sacrifice, and transformation in Christ.
The study was originally prepared as a doctoral dissertation at the University of Balamand’s St. John of Damascus Institute of Theology before later being translated into multiple languages and circulated internationally within Orthodox academic and pastoral circles. Church leaders said the English-language release is intended to reach clergy, theologians, students, and married couples seeking a deeper theological understanding of marriage.
Fr. Bassam serves as associate professor of pastoral theology and counseling at the University of Balamand and also pastors Holy Dormition Church in Lebanon. His academic background includes studies at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology and Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.
Previously, the UOJ reported that Aorist Press had released its second printing of the Parish Book of Needs.
