Romania Honors Victims of Communist Prisons on National Day of Remembrance

BUCHAREST — Romania on May 14 marked its annual National Day of Honoring Martyrs in Communist Prisons, commemorating the thousands of political prisoners arrested, tortured, and imprisoned under the country’s postwar communist regime. The observance recalls the mass arrests carried out during the night of May 14–15, 1948, when authorities detained more than 10,000 students, intellectuals, clergy, and political opponents.

Many of those arrested were sent to notorious prisons and labor camps in Aiud, Gherla, Sighetu Marmației, and Râmnicu Sărat, facilities long associated with religious persecution and political repression during the communist era. Among the Orthodox Christian figures imprisoned were Nicolae Steinhardt, Arsenie Papacioc, Iustin Pârvu, Gheorghe Calciu-Dumitreasa, Dumitru Stăniloae, and Sofian de la Antim.

The Romanian Orthodox Church in recent years has intensified efforts to recognize many of the clergy and confessors who suffered during communist persecution. Several figures connected to the prison system were canonized in 2024, with solemn proclamations held in 2025 during what the Romanian Orthodox Church designated as the Commemorative Year of Romanian Orthodox Spiritual Fathers and Confessors of the 20th Century.

The memorial observance was formally established by Romanian law in 2017 and requires state institutions, cultural organizations, and public broadcasters to organize commemorative programs dedicated to victims of communist repression. Events held across the country include memorial services, wreath-laying ceremonies, and educational programming focused on the persecution endured by those imprisoned for their faith, convictions, and political opposition.
