Memorial for Abp. Iakovos Scheduled for Thursday at HCHC

The tribute will feature a documentary premiere, panel discussions, and a memorial service, celebrating Iakovos's contributions to the Church, ecumenism, and civil rights.

BROOKLINE — On October 23, 2025, the Huffington Ecumenical Institute at Hellenic College Holy Cross (HCHC) will host a tribute marking the 20th anniversary of Abp. Iakovos’ passing.

As Archbishop of North and South America from 1959 to 1996, Iakovos was a visionary leader whose commitment to Orthodox faith, ecumenical dialogue, and social justice left an indelible legacy. His historic participation in the 1965 Selma march alongside Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. underscored his dedication to human dignity and civil rights.

Held at the Maliotis Cultural Center on HCHC’s campus, the event features a rich program. It begins at 1:00 pm with greetings from Fr. John Chryssavgis, Dr. Demetri Katos, and Abp. Elpidophoros, followed by the premiere of the documentary Iakovos: In His Own Words.

Faculty and guest panels, including Met. Gerasimos and Prof. Lewis Patsavos, will discuss Iakovos’ cultural, educational, and ecumenical contributions. The day concludes with Vespers, a memorial service at his gravesite, and an invitation-only dinner.
