Serbian Patriarch Appeals to World Leaders Over Kosovo Law
Patr. Porfirije calls on world leaders to prevent a law in Pristina that threatens Serbian communities, education, and Orthodox holy sites.
BELGRADE, SERBIA — His Holiness Patr. Porfirije of Serbia has sent an urgent letter to Pope Leo XIV, Presidents Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump, and Emmanuel Macron, the Prime Ministers of Italy, Great Britain, and Germany, as well as the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Director-General of UNESCO, urging intervention to halt the enforcement of a highly discriminatory law on foreigners in Pristina.
Patr. Porfirije warned that the law threatens the functioning of the University of Kosovska Mitrovica, Serbian primary and secondary schools, the health system, and the survival of the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija. The law could force the closure of schools and hospitals, endanger Orthodox holy sites, and accelerate the departure of Serbs from the region, home to over 1,300 Christian monuments, including four UNESCO World Heritage sites in danger.
The Patriarch stressed that the Serbian Orthodox Church continues to seek peaceful solutions while urging state authorities to protect human lives and uphold the cultural and spiritual heritage of the region.
Previously, the UOJ reported that Patr. Porfirije preached humility at the Church of St. Sava.
