Patr. Porfirije called for humility and repentance in his sermon at the Church of St.  Sava, drawing on the Prodigal Son parable.

BELGRADE, SERBIA — On February 8, 2026, Patr. Porfirije of Serbia presided over the Divine Liturgy at the Church of St. Sava on Vračar, delivering a powerful sermon on humility, repentance, and spiritual growth.

Drawing on the Gospel parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11–32), which he described as one of the most beautiful literary works in human history, the Patriarch emphasized that repentance is the path to returning to one’s true spiritual roots. He encouraged the faithful to embrace humility, resist pride, and cultivate a sincere relationship with God. Patriarch Porfirije explained that the parable’s three figures—the father and his two sons—symbolize contrasting spiritual attitudes: the elder son embodies obedience and fidelity, while the younger son reflects rebellion and independence. He noted that individuals often experience both perspectives in their spiritual journey.

After the liturgy, Patr. Porfirije visited and blessed representatives of the Red Cross and the Institute for Blood Transfusion, including participants in a voluntary blood donation drive held at the parish hall.

Previously, the UOJ reported that Patr. Porfirije gave a blessing to the leadership of UOJ-Serbia.
