El Tonto por Cristo
A film beautifully awash in human imperfection and longing for God
El Tonto Por Cristo, or The Fool for Christ, draws viewers into a spaghetti-Western atmosphere while evoking the faith of the old country. The film centers on Father John, the abbot of a small, unconventional Texas monastic community. Endearingly played by Matthew Posey, Father John patiently guides his monks toward the heavenly things that occupy his own mind.
As he embraces the difficult vocation of the holy fool, the film observes both his own spiritual struggle and the imperfect brotherhood around him, suggesting that holiness is found not in escaping human weakness but in meeting it with repentance, humility and love.
