The New Saints of Mount Athos
A brief look at the lives of six new saints glorified by the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
On Saturday, August 29, upon conclusion of the Holy and Sacred Synod’s proceedings at the Patriarchal Church in the Phanar, His All-Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, formally ratified the Patriarchal and Synodal acts recognizing six new Athonite saints. The Synod had voted to glorify the saints earlier this year and in 2025. His Holiness’ signature marked the conclusion of this process.
The glorifications were approved as follows:
- October 18, 2025: Hieromonk Niphon (Ionescu) and Monk Nectarie (Cretu)
- August 31, 2025: Hieromonk Petroniu (Tănase) and Elder Dionisie (Ignat)
- February 11, 2026: Hieromonk Tikhon and Monk George, also known as Hadji-Georgis
