Funeral Held for Archpriest Georgiy Gorbenko in Kherson

KHERSON, UKRAINE — The Kherson Diocese held a funeral service on January 8, 2026, at the Holy Spirit Cathedral for Archpriest Georgiy Gorbenko, rector of the Pokrovsky Church in the village of Orlovo, who was tragically killed by a Russian drone strike on January 5.
The service was led by Metr. Ioann of Kherson and Tavria, joined by diocesan clergy in prayer and remembrance. The attack on his parish underscores the ongoing dangers faced by clergy and civilians in conflict-affected regions of Ukraine.
The Kherson Diocese expressed deep condolences to the family of Archpriest Georgiy and called for prayers for the departed priest. Church officials emphasized the importance of honoring his life and service to the faithful, describing him as a devoted shepherd to his parishioners.
“Eternal memory to Father Georgiy,” the diocese stated, reaffirming the community’s solidarity and spiritual support amid the ongoing conflict.
