Metr. Neophytos of Morphou Warns 2026 Could Mark a Decisive Turning Point for Humanity
Cypriot hierarch links global tensions and war rhetoric to spiritual crisis, urging repentance and renewed life in the Divine Liturgy.
MORPHOU — Metropolitan Neophytos of Morphou has issued a stark warning about the year 2026, Pentepostagma reports, describing it as a potentially decisive and dangerous turning point in human history. Speaking amid escalating global tensions, the Cypriot hierarch said humanity has entered a “very dangerous year,” one that some secular analyses identify as a possible moment of worldwide conflagration.
As world powers “tune the instruments of their weapons,” Metropolitan Neophytos warned of the threat of nuclear warfare and the pollution of creation through weapons of mass destruction. He interpreted these dangers as consequences of humanity’s lack of repentance, stating that when people are not corrected by peace, they are “corrected by a difficult operation,” permitted by God.
The Metropolitan stressed that all humanity and creation will be tested in faith and patience. Against fear and destruction, he pointed to the Divine Liturgy as the Church’s true refuge and weapon, describing it as filled with divine energies that sanctify both soul and body. He also cautioned against overreliance on the internet and mobile technology, calling believers instead to prayer, repentance, and spiritual vigilance.
