Metr. Nathanael Issues Lenten Archpastoral Message
Metr. Nathanael urged Chicago faithful to answer Christ’s question—“Do you love Me?”—with repentance and hope this Lent.
CHICAGO, IL — At the outset of Holy and Great Lent, Metr. Nathanael of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago issued an archpastoral message calling clergy, monastics, and faithful to examine the sincerity of their love for Christ.
Framing his reflection around Christ’s question to the Apostle Peter—“Do you love Me?” (John 21:15–17)—the Metropolitan emphasized that Lent is not merely about outward discipline, but about “the orientation of our heart.” He reminded the faithful that the Lord’s question is not meant to shame, but to draw believers closer through honesty and repentance.
Referencing the Parable of the Sower, he said loving Christ means allowing Him to “plant Your word in me again,” even when hearts feel hardened or distracted. Metr. Nathanael also asked forgiveness for any pastoral shortcomings and requested prayers for his ministry. He concluded by urging the faithful to begin Lent with humility and hope, trusting in the joy of the Resurrection.
