Florida Cathedral Launches $6 Million Restoration Campaign
St. Nicholas Cathedral in Tarpon Springs is seeking $6 million to preserve a beloved Orthodox landmark and secure its future for generations to come.
TARPON SPRINGS, FL — Leaders of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral have launched a $6 million capital campaign to address extensive water damage and preserve one of the most recognizable Orthodox Christian landmarks in the United States. The effort, titled “A Legacy of Faith, A Future of Hope,” aims to restore the cathedral and improve several key parish facilities while safeguarding the community’s spiritual and cultural heritage.
Church officials say a leaking roof has caused significant deterioration inside the 83-year-old cathedral, resulting in damaged plaster, peeling paint, and other structural concerns. The restoration campaign will begin with roof replacement and repairs to the cathedral’s exterior and interior. Additional projects include renovations to Fr. Tryfon Hall and upgrades to the St. Nicholas Community Center.
The cathedral, which hosts the annual Theophany celebration that attracts thousands of visitors to Tarpon Springs each year, is widely regarded as a spiritual, cultural, and economic anchor for the community. Organizers report that the campaign has already secured $3 million in pledges and hope to raise the remaining funds over the coming months.
In a letter to parishioners, the Very Rev. Fr. Athanasios Haros emphasized the importance of parish-wide participation in the effort, writing: “This is not just a campaign for the parish; it is a campaign by the parish, reflecting our shared commitment and aspirations.” He encouraged parishioners to help shape the project’s future through prayer, stewardship, and community involvement.
Campaign leaders say the initiative is designed not only to repair buildings, but also to ensure future generations can continue to worship, celebrate milestones, and build parish life at St. Nicholas Cathedral. More information about the project can be found here, and donations can be made here.
