Hawaiian Iveron Icon Visits Holy Trinity Cathedral in Chicago

CHICAGO — The miraculous Hawaiian Iveron Icon of the Mother of God was received at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Chicago on September 7, the Prefeast of the Nativity of the Theotokos. The visit drew several hundred people to the Diocesan Cathedral of Chicago and the Midwest, where the faithful gathered for Divine Services and to venerate the beloved icon.

The icon was received by Cathedral Dean Fr. Alexander Koranda and Fr. Philip Maikkula before being placed in the center of the cathedral. Divine Liturgy was celebrated by Fr. Alexander, Fr. Nectarios Yangson, guardian of the icon, Fr. Philip, and Deacon Seraphim Andov. The Cathedral Choir was directed by Rdr. Vladimir Lymar.

Following the Divine Liturgy, the Akathist to the Hawaiian Icon was served. Abp. Daniel of Chicago and the Diocese of the Midwest also came before the icon in prayer. At the conclusion of the Akathist, Fr. Nectarios spoke about the Gospel reading and miracles he said he had recently witnessed during the icon’s travels.

The faithful were given an opportunity to venerate the icon and to be anointed with the holy myrrh that streams from it. Several hundred people visited Holy Trinity Cathedral throughout the morning and afternoon while the icon was present, participating in prayer and venerating the image of the Mother of God.

The Hawaiian Iveron Icon is continuing its visit to churches in the Chicago area and will travel to additional parishes throughout the Midwest. Its ongoing pilgrimage is providing Orthodox faithful in the region with opportunities to pray before the icon, seek the intercession of the Mother of God, and receive its reported myrrh.
