Russian Shelling Destroys UOC Church in Sumy Region

SEMENIVKA, UKRAINE — An Orthodox church in the village of Semenivka was completely destroyed during overnight Russian shelling on July 22, according to the Konotop Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), leaving the local parish without its place of worship.

The eparchy reported that the church sustained a direct hit during the attack, triggering a fire that consumed the building. By the time the flames were extinguished, virtually nothing remained of the structure. The roof, walls, altar, iconostasis, parish archive, and liturgical furnishings were all destroyed, reducing the church to charred beams, fragments of brickwork, and the remains of its foundation.

Church officials described the temple as the spiritual center of the local Orthodox community, where parishioners had gathered for worship, prayer, and the sacramental life of the Church. The destruction of the sanctuary leaves the faithful without their parish church as fighting continues in Ukraine's northeastern frontier region, which has experienced frequent attacks in recent months.

The UOC Information Center confirmed the destruction, citing the Konotop Eparchy's report and local sources. Photographs released after the attack show the church completely gutted by fire, with smoke still rising from the ruins.

The destruction of the Semenivka church is the latest in a series of attacks that have damaged or destroyed religious sites during the ongoing war. Church leaders have repeatedly called for prayers for the affected communities and for the preservation of churches that continue to serve as centers of spiritual life amid the conflict.
